Governed by udaya

Why this date?

Every Monday falling in the month of Shravana. Which Mondays those are depends on the frame the region reckons Shravana in โ€” the amanta and purnimanta months begin a fortnight apart, and the eastern solar Shraban is different again, so the SERIES itself differs by tradition rather than just its labels. This site shows the series your region setting selects.

Dates in the coming years

What In short

The Mondays of Shravana, kept for Shiva. Water or milk is offered on the linga, many keep a fast through the day, and the temples fill โ€” the Kanwar pilgrimage to fetch Ganga water belongs to this month.

Why The reason behind it

Monday is Shiva's day and Shravana is Shiva's month; the two together are the year's most concentrated period of Shiva worship. The month's association traces to the samudra manthana, when Shiva drank the halahala poison, and the water poured over the linga is understood as cooling him still.

Traditional basis

Shiva Purana on the Shravana vrata โ€” Establishes the month and the Monday observance for Shiva.

Samudra manthana narrative โ€” The halahala episode, from which the abhisheka of water and milk takes its meaning.

How At home, step by step

  1. Offer water, milk, bel leaves and dhatura on the linga.
  2. Keep the fast to whatever degree the household keeps it โ€” commonly one meal, taken after the evening puja.
  3. Recite the Shiva Chalisa or the Rudram where that is the practice.
What you'll need
  • Water, and milk for the abhisheka
  • Bel leaves
  • White flowers and dhatura
  • A ghee lamp
Fasting and breaking the fast

Widely kept. A single meal after the evening puja is the common form; some keep it nirjala, and the sixteen-Monday Solah Somwar vrat is begun in this month by many.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

Every Monday in one particular month is Shiva's day. People pour water and milk over the Shiva linga and many do not eat until the evening.

Common questions

Why does the number of Sawan Somwars differ between calendars?
Because Shravana itself starts on different days in different frames. The purnimanta month of the north begins a fortnight before the amanta month of the west and south, and the eastern solar Shraban is different again. Four Mondays in one reckoning can be five in another.
