Dates in the coming years

What In short

The Tuesdays of Shravana, kept by married women — in most families for the first five years of marriage — for the husband's long life and the household's wellbeing. The puja is done in a group where possible, and the katha is recited.

Why The reason behind it

Gauri won Shiva by tapas, and the vrat asks for the marriage she obtained. Its restriction to the early years is deliberate: it is a new wife's observance, taught by the mother-in-law and often performed at the mother's house, and the group setting is part of what is being transmitted.

Traditional basis

Mangala Gauri vrata katha — The recited narrative, carried by household practice rather than a fixed recension.

Shravana-month vrata literature — Places the Tuesday Gauri vrat alongside the Monday Shiva vrat of the same month.

How At home, step by step

  1. Install the Gauri image or a supari representing her.
  2. Perform the puja with sixteen of each offering — sixteen flowers, sixteen leaves, sixteen fruits.
  3. Hear the katha, then eat with the other women keeping it.
What you'll need
  • A Gauri image or a supari
  • Sixteen each of flowers, leaves and fruits
  • Bangles and turmeric
  • A ghee lamp
Fasting and breaking the fast

A single meal, broken after the puja. Not one of the strict fasts.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice — if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

On Tuesdays in one month of the year, women who have been married a few years do a puja together for Parvati, and everyone eats together afterwards.

Common questions

Is it only for the first five years of marriage?
That is the usual convention and it is where most families stop, but it is a custom rather than a prohibition — some continue, and some conclude with a formal udyapan at the end of the fifth year.
