Why this date?

The eleventh tithi of each paksha, twice a lunar month. The governing moment is ARUNODAYA โ€” about ninety-six minutes before sunrise. Vaishnava practice additionally rejects a viddha Ekadashi and moves the fast to Dvadashi, which is why two households in the same street can correctly fast on different days.

  • Computed by the panchanga engine for your location
  • Follows a written selection rule, not a copied list
  • The governing period is stated, and the rule is applied to it
  • The written guide has not yet been reviewed by a named scholar
  • Smarta and Vaishnava reckonings can differ by a day.
Why other calendars may differ

Vaishnava practice rejects a viddha Ekadashi โ€” one contaminated by the preceding Dashami at arunodaya โ€” and shifts the fast to Dvadashi. Smarta practice may keep it. Both follow a rule.

Dates in the coming years

What In short

The fortnightly fast of Vishnu. Twenty-four in an ordinary year, twenty-six when an adhika masa falls, each with its own name and katha.

Why The reason behind it

The Padma Purana's account personifies Ekadashi as a being born to combat the demon Mura โ€” but the practical logic is plainer: a regular, twice-monthly reset of diet and attention, held to the lunar cycle so it cannot drift into convenience.

Traditional basis

Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda โ€” The Ekadashi mahatmya and the katha for each of the twenty-four.

Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana โ€” Parallel prescriptions of the fast and the Dvadashi parana.

How At home, step by step

  1. Set aside grains and pulses from the Dashami evening meal.
  2. Keep the fast through Ekadashi according to your household's rule: nirjala, or phalahara on fruit, milk and non-grain foods.
  3. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, or the katha of that particular Ekadashi.
  4. Break the fast within the computed Dvadashi parana window the next morning.

What you'll need
  • Tulsi leaves
  • Fruit, milk, and permitted non-grain foods
  • A ghee lamp
Fasting and breaking the fast

Rice, wheat, pulses and beans are excluded. What is permitted varies by household โ€” sabudana, samak, singhara flour, potato, fruit and milk are the usual phalahara foods. The parana window matters as much as the fast.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

For children

Twice a month people skip rice and wheat for a day, for Vishnu. It is the same day every fortnight in the moon's cycle.

Common questions

Why do the calendars in my family disagree about Ekadashi?
Because Smarta and Vaishnava reckonings genuinely differ on a viddha Ekadashi. Set your sampradaya in Settings; where the two diverge this site shows both dates rather than silently picking one.
