Governed by udaya

Why this date?

The fourth tithi, recurring twice a month. The bright-fortnight one is the monthly Vinayaka Chaturthi; the dark-fortnight one is Sankashti Chaturthi and has its own page. The single annual Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada is a third thing again, selected by midday rather than sunrise, and also has its own page.

Dates in the coming years

What In short

The monthly Ganesha tithi in the bright fortnight. Kept lightly — a Ganesha puja and often a single meal — as the recurring counterpart of the annual festival.

Why The reason behind it

Chaturthi is Ganesha's tithi in both fortnights, approached differently in each: the bright one is a straightforward monthly observance, and the dark one is the moonrise-timed Sankashti kept for the removal of obstacles.

Traditional basis

Ganesha vrata tradition — Chaturthi as Ganesha's tithi in both pakshas.

Monthly tithi observance — The Shukla Chaturthi as the lighter recurring form.

How At home, step by step

  1. A short Ganesha puja; durva grass and modak where the household keeps them.
  2. Many keep a single meal.
Fasting and breaking the fast

A single meal where kept.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice — if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

The fourth day after the new moon, which belongs to Ganesha. There is one every month — the really big one is only once a year.

Common questions

Is this the same as Ganesh Chaturthi?
No. Ganesh Chaturthi is the single Bhadrapada occurrence, selected by the midday tithi and kept as a ten-day festival. This row is the recurring monthly one.

Not the same day

These fall nearby or share the tithi, and are often confused with this observance. They are separate, and this site dates them separately.
