Vrat
A vow — usually including a fast, but not only a fast.
A vrata is an undertaking: the fast is the visible part, but the sankalpa (statement of intent), the worship, the katha and the parana (the correct breaking) are all part of it. A fast kept without the sankalpa and broken outside the window is, in the tradition's own terms, an incomplete vrata rather than a failed one.
