Aparahna
The afternoon — the fourth of five parts of the day.
The daytime from sunrise to sunset divided into five; aparahna is the fourth. It governs shraddha and tarpana, the Raksha Bandhan tying, and the Vijayadashami rites.

- Raksha Bandhan A sister ties a thread on her brother's wrist; he undertakes her protection. On the same Purnima, brahmins of several regions perform the annual Upakarma — the changing of the sacred thread.
- Vijayadashami The tenth day. Durga's victory over Mahishasura in the east and south; Rama's victory over Ravana in the north. Also the day tools, instruments and books are honoured, and the traditional day to begin learning.
