Governed by sankranti-instant

Why this date?

A SOLAR observance in most of the regions that keep it: the Kanya sankranti, when the Sun enters the sidereal sign Kanya, which is why it falls on nearly the same civil date each year while the lunar festivals around it move by weeks. Some regions keep a Vishwakarma day on a lunar tithi instead, and the two do not coincide.

What In short

The day tools, machines and workshops are worshipped. Factories, garages, workshops and studios stop work, clean and garland their equipment, and do not use it for the day.

Why The reason behind it

Vishwakarma is the architect of the gods โ€” of Lanka, of Dwarka, of the Pushpaka, of the weapons. The day belongs to whatever the household or the workplace makes things WITH, and the tools are the object of the puja rather than the instrument of it, which is why they are not used.

Traditional basis

Rig Veda, Vishvakarma suktas โ€” The earliest layer, where Vishvakarma is the all-maker.

Puranic architectural tradition and the Shilpa Shastras โ€” Establish Vishwakarma as the patron of craft and construction, from which the artisan observance follows.

How At home, step by step

  1. Clean the tools, machines and vehicles and stop using them for the day.
  2. Garland and mark them with kumkum; install the Vishwakarma image in the workspace.
  3. Perform the puja at the workplace rather than at home, and distribute prasad to those who work there.
What you'll need
  • Flowers and garlands for the tools
  • Kumkum and rice
  • A ghee lamp
  • Fruit and sweets for prasad
Fasting and breaking the fast

Not a fasting day.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

The day when tools and machines get a holiday too. They are washed, given flowers, and nobody is allowed to use them.

Common questions

Why is it on the same date most years when other festivals move?
Because it is reckoned by the Sun, not the Moon. The Kanya sankranti is a solar event, and solar events drift by only a day or so against the civil calendar, while lunar festivals move by weeks.
