Why this date?

Jyeshtha — kept on the Amavasya in the north and on the Purnima in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The same observance on two different tithis of one month, which is a frame difference rather than a disagreement about the rule.

What In short

A married woman's vrat for her husband's long life. The banyan tree is circled with a thread — commonly seven times — the Savitri katha is heard, and a fast is kept.

Why The reason behind it

Savitri followed Yama when he took Satyavan's life and argued with him until he returned it, and she did it under a banyan. The tree is the vrat's object because it was the witness: the thread wound around it binds the promise the story turns on.

Traditional basis

Mahabharata, Vana Parva — the Savitri and Satyavan narrative — The episode the vrat re-enacts, including the banyan.

Regional vrata literature on Vat Savitri — Prescribes the circumambulation, the thread and the katha.

How At home, step by step

  1. Circle the banyan winding the thread, commonly seven times.
  2. Offer water, kumkum and fruit at the root.
  3. Hear the Savitri katha; break the fast after the puja.
Fasting and breaking the fast

A day-long fast, kept nirjala in many households.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice — if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

Married women tie a thread round and round a banyan tree and ask for their husbands to live long, because of Savitri who argued with the god of death and won.

Common questions

Why do different states keep it on different days?
Because the north reckons it on the Jyeshtha Amavasya and the west on the Jyeshtha Purnima. Both are long-standing; it is a difference of regional convention rather than an error in either.
