Why The reason behind it
Savitri followed Yama when he took Satyavan's life and argued with him until he returned it, and she did it under a banyan. The tree is the vrat's object because it was the witness: the thread wound around it binds the promise the story turns on.

- Why do different states keep it on different days?
- Because the north reckons it on the Jyeshtha Amavasya and the west on the Jyeshtha Purnima. Both are long-standing; it is a difference of regional convention rather than an error in either.
