at sunrise. This observance is governed by udaya, not by the sunrise tithi โ which is why the tithi named here is often not the one the festival is named for.

Governed by udaya
Why this date?
Chaitra Shukla Pratipada โ the first tithi of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. This is the LUNAR new year, and it is the same day as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Cheti Chand for Sindhis and Navreh in Kashmir. It is not the same as the solar new year a fortnight or so later, which is a different event on a different reckoning.

What In short
The first day of the lunar year for the Deccan and the west. The year's new panchanga is read, the Ugadi pachadi is eaten, and in Maharashtra the gudi is raised outside the house.
- Deity: Brahma; the new samvatsara
Why The reason behind it
Brahma is said to have begun creation on this day, and the year takes its name โ one of the sixty samvatsara names โ from here. The pachadi is the day's argument in edible form: six tastes in one dish, because a year contains all six and pretending otherwise is not preparation.
Traditional basis
Brahma Purana on the creation day โ Establishes Chaitra Shukla Pratipada as the beginning of the created year, from which the samvatsara count runs.
Panchanga-shravana tradition โ The formal reading of the year's almanac on this day, still kept in temples and households.
How At home, step by step
- Bathe early, and hang a toran of mango leaves and neem at the door.
- Eat the Ugadi pachadi โ neem flower, jaggery, tamarind, salt, chilli and raw mango.
- Hear the panchanga shravana, the reading of the year ahead.
- In Maharashtra, raise the gudi โ a bright cloth, a garland and an inverted pot on a bamboo pole โ outside the house.
What you'll need
- Neem flowers and tender mango
- Jaggery, tamarind, salt and chilli for the pachadi
- Mango-leaf toran
- The new year's panchanga
- A silk cloth and pot for the gudi, in Maharashtra
Fasting and breaking the fast
Not a fasting day.
Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.
Personal In your region
- Andhra & Telangana (Telugu)
The pachadi and the panchanga shravana are the day's core; the six tastes are counted out explicitly. - Karnataka (Kannada)
Kept as Yugadi with bevu-bella, neem and jaggery, on the same reasoning as the pachadi. - Maharashtra (Marathi)
Gudi Padwa โ the gudi is raised at dawn, and it is one of the three-and-a-half auspicious muhurtas of the Marathi year. - Goa & Konkan (Konkani)
Samvatsar Padvo, kept with the same lunar reckoning.
For children
The first day of the new year. You eat one dish that is sweet and sour and bitter and salty and hot all at once, because a year is like that too.
Common questions
- Is Ugadi the same as Baisakhi or Vishu?
- No, and the difference is structural rather than regional. Ugadi is LUNAR โ the first tithi of Chaitra โ and moves by weeks against the civil calendar. Vishu, Baisakhi, Puthandu and Poila Boishakh are SOLAR, fixed to the Sun's entry into Mesha, which is why they sit around the same mid-April dates every year.
- Why does the site not show a separate Gudi Padwa?
- Because the governed dataset carries one row for this day and this site does not invent rows. Gudi Padwa is the same observance under the Maharashtrian name and is listed here among the alternative names.
Not the same day
These fall nearby or share the tithi, and are often confused with this observance. They are separate, and this site dates them separately.
