Why this date?

Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, the day after Prabodhini Ekadashi on which Vishnu is understood to wake from the four months of Chaturmasya. Some households keep the vivaha on the Ekadashi itself and others on the Dwadashi; this site follows the dataset's Dwadashi reckoning.

What In short

The ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu in his Shaligrama form, performed as a household wedding complete with mandap, garlands and the exchange. It marks the end of Chaturmasya and the reopening of the wedding season.

Why The reason behind it

Vrinda's devotion, and Vishnu's word to her that she would be with him as the tulsi. Beyond the katha, the day does real calendrical work: weddings are not held during the four months of Chaturmasya, and the tulsi's marriage is the first of the season, opening it for everyone else.

Traditional basis

Padma Purana, Vrinda and Jalandhara narrative โ€” The basis for the tulsi's identification with Vrinda and her union with Vishnu.

Chaturmasya vrata literature โ€” Establishes Prabodhini as the waking of Vishnu and the end of the period in which auspicious ceremonies are suspended.

How At home, step by step

  1. Decorate the tulsi vrindavan with a small mandap, cloth and garlands.
  2. Place the Shaligrama or a Krishna image beside it.
  3. Perform the marriage rite as a household wedding, with the mangalashtaka recited.
  4. Distribute prasad; sugarcane and amla are used in the decoration in many regions.
What you'll need
  • The tulsi plant in its vrindavan
  • A Shaligrama or Krishna image
  • Sugarcane stalks, amla and marigold
  • A red cloth or sari for the plant
  • Turmeric, kumkum and a ghee lamp
Fasting and breaking the fast

The preceding Prabodhini Ekadashi is the fast; the Dwadashi is the celebration.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

A real little wedding, where the tulsi plant in the courtyard is dressed as a bride and married to Vishnu. After this, people can have weddings again.

Common questions

Why do weddings stop for four months and start again here?
Chaturmasya โ€” the four months from Ashadha to Kartik โ€” is traditionally a period when Vishnu is understood to rest and auspicious ceremonies are suspended. Prabodhini is his waking, and the tulsi's marriage is the season's first, which is why wedding dates cluster immediately after it.
Is it on the Ekadashi or the Dwadashi?
Practice genuinely varies, and both are kept. The waking is the Ekadashi; the marriage is most commonly the Dwadashi that follows, which is the reckoning this site's dataset uses.
