Why this date?

The Poosam (Pushya) nakshatra in the Tamil month Thai, commonly with the Purnima. A nakshatra observance.

Dates come from the calculation engine and are independent of the written guide. How we calculate โ†’

This is not commonly observed in North India, the region you've set. It is kept in Tamil Nadu (Tamil), Kerala (Malayalam), Andhra & Telangana (Telugu). We show it rather than hide it โ€” a calendar that only shows you your own region tells you less about the country you live in, not more.

What In short

Murugan's festival of vows. Kavadi is carried โ€” from a simple pot of milk to elaborate frames borne on the shoulders, and in some traditions with skewers through the skin โ€” and the pilgrimage is made on foot to Palani, Batu Caves and other Murugan sites.

Why The reason behind it

Parvati gave Murugan the vel on this day to defeat Surapadma, and the kavadi is a vow discharged: the burden is carried because something was asked for and given. The scale of what pilgrims undertake follows directly from that โ€” it is a payment, not a display.

Traditional basis

Skanda Purana and the Kanda Puranam โ€” The giving of the vel and the Surapadma narrative.

Kavadi tradition โ€” The vow-and-burden structure from which the practice follows.

How At home, step by step

  1. Prepare with a period of vegetarian diet and abstinence before the day.
  2. Carry the kavadi or the paal kudam, the milk pot, to the temple.
  3. Palani, Thiruchendur and Batu Caves hold the largest observances.
Fasting and breaking the fast

A preparatory fast is kept by those carrying kavadi, commonly for days beforehand.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

Murugan's festival, when people carry decorated arches on their shoulders โ€” sometimes for many miles โ€” because they promised they would.

Common questions

Why do some pilgrims pierce themselves?
It is part of the vow in some traditions, undertaken after preparation and in a state the practitioners describe as trance. It is neither universal nor required; many carry only a pot of milk.
