Why this date?

A fixed civil-calendar anniversary โ€” Sree Narayana Guru's samadhi in 1928 โ€” rather than a calendrical observance.

  • Computed by the panchanga engine for your location
  • Follows a written selection rule, not a copied list
  • Governed by the whole day rather than a specific period
  • The written guide has not yet been reviewed by a named scholar

This is not commonly observed in North India, the region you've set. It is kept in Kerala (Malayalam). We show it rather than hide it โ€” a calendar that only shows you your own region tells you less about the country you live in, not more.

What In short

The death anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru, kept across Kerala and by the SNDP. Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala is the centre of the observance.

Why The reason behind it

He consecrated a Siva linga at Aruvippuram in 1888 as a man of a community barred from temple entry, and answered the objection with the line that it was an Ezhava Siva. The day is kept for a reform carried out from inside the tradition rather than against it, and his formula โ€” one caste, one religion, one god for man โ€” is recited on it.

Traditional basis

Sree Narayana Guru's own compositions โ€” Atmopadesa Satakam and the Aruvippuram consecration, which the observance rests on.

Sivagiri Mutt tradition โ€” The samadhi dinam observance and the annual Sivagiri pilgrimage.

How At home, step by step

  1. Attend the observances at Sivagiri Mutt or the local SNDP branch.
  2. Recitation of the Guru's works forms the day's programme.
Fasting and breaking the fast

Not a fasting day.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

The day people remember Sree Narayana Guru, who taught that everyone is one people whatever caste they are said to belong to, and who built temples for those who were kept out of them.

Common questions

Is this a religious or a social observance?
Both, and it does not separate them โ€” that was the point of his reform. The day is kept devotionally at the mutt and as a social-reform anniversary more widely.
