Why this date?

The Trayodashi tithi as it holds during PRADOSHA โ€” roughly the hour and a half around sunset. Because the governing period is at sunset, the civil day chosen is often not the one carrying Trayodashi at sunrise.

What In short

The twice-monthly Shiva observance, kept in the ninety minutes around sunset with abhisheka and the Pradosha stotra.

Why The reason behind it

Pradosha is the hour of the tandava. The Sundays through Saturdays each carry their own name and reputed benefit โ€” Soma Pradosha, Bhauma Pradosha, Shani Pradosha โ€” and Shani Pradosha in particular draws the largest temple attendance.

Traditional basis

Skanda Purana โ€” The Pradosha vrata and the Pradosha stotra.

Shiva Purana โ€” The pradosha-kala worship and its ordering.

How At home, step by step

  1. Bathe in the late afternoon and go to the temple, or prepare the household worship, before sunset.
  2. Perform the abhisheka within the pradosha window; the site shows it for your location.
  3. Offer bilva leaves.
  4. Recite the Pradosha stotra or the panchakshara.
  5. Where a fast is kept, break it after the pradosha worship.

Fasting and breaking the fast

A fast from the morning, broken after the evening worship, is the common household rule; some keep only the evening abstention.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

For children

Twice a month, just as the sun goes down, there is a special hour and a half for Shiva. That is when the temple bells all ring at once.

Common questions

Why is Pradosham shown on a day my wall calendar marks as Chaturdashi?
Because the test is the tithi at sunset, not at sunrise. When Trayodashi begins during the day and holds through the pradosha window, that evening is the Pradosham even though the day began under Dwadashi.
