What In short
The anniversary of the first installation of the Guru Granth Sahib. Gurdwaras mark the day the scripture was first opened and read at Amritsar, with Akhand Path, kirtan and langar.
Why The reason behind it
This is the scripture's own day rather than a Guru's. Guru Arjan compiled the Adi Granth and installed it, and Baba Buddha performed the first reading โ the beginning of the practice by which the book, not a person, would eventually hold the Guruship.
Traditional basis
Sikh historical record of the 1604 installation โ The compilation by Guru Arjan and the first parkash at Harmandir Sahib.
Sikh Rehat Maryada โ Governs the parkash and the treatment of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Common questions
- How is this different from Gurgaddi Diwas?
- Parkash Utsav marks the book's first installation in 1604; Gurgaddi Diwas marks 1708, when Guru Gobind Singh conferred the Guruship on it. First reading, then succession โ two different anniversaries of the same scripture.
Not the same day
These fall nearby or share the tithi, and are often confused with this observance. They are separate, and this site dates them separately.
