What In short
Assam's commemoration of Lachit Borphukan, the Ahom commander who held the Mughal advance at Saraighat in 1671. Kept at Jorhat and across the state, and by the armed forces at the National Defence Academy, where the best cadet receives the Lachit Borphukan gold medal.
Why The reason behind it
Saraighat was a naval defence of the Brahmaputra that turned a losing position, and the account most repeated of him is his beheading of his own uncle for slacking on the defence works, with the line that the uncle was not greater than his country. The day is kept for that standard rather than only for the victory.
