Why this date?

Kartik Shukla Panchami, the fifth day of the bright fortnight โ€” the day that closes the Gujarati Diwali sequence.

  • Computed by the panchanga engine for your location
  • Follows a written selection rule, not a copied list
  • Governed by the whole day rather than a specific period

Dates come from the calculation engine and are independent of the written guide. How we calculate โ†’

This is not commonly observed in North India, the region you've set. It is kept in Gujarat (Gujarati), Goa & Konkan (Konkani). We show it rather than hide it โ€” a calendar that only shows you your own region tells you less about the country you live in, not more.

What In short

The day Gujarati businesses reopen after Diwali. New account books are begun with the words Shubh and Labh written on the first page, and the first transaction of the year is made.

Why The reason behind it

The sequence that began with the cow and ran through wealth, light and the mountain of food ends with the resumption of work. Labh means gain, and the day is deliberately the one on which gain is asked for and begun rather than merely wished for.

Traditional basis

Gujarati mercantile custom โ€” The chopda pujan and the reopening of the accounts, carried by trade practice rather than by a textual prescription.

Jain Gyan Panchami โ€” Kept on the same tithi as a day of scriptural veneration, from which the alternative name comes.

How At home, step by step

  1. Open the new account books and write Shubh on the left page and Labh on the right.
  2. Draw the Sathiya (swastika) on the first page.
  3. Perform a short Ganesha and Lakshmi puja and make the first transaction.
What you'll need
  • New account books
  • Kumkum for the Sathiya
  • A ghee lamp
  • Sweets
Fasting and breaking the fast

Not a fasting day.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

The day the shops open again after Diwali, and new account books are started with Shubh and Labh written at the top.

Common questions

Why do businesses wait until the fifth day?
Because the Diwali sequence is a closing as much as an opening: the old books are closed before Diwali and the new ones are begun on a day chosen for it. Reopening earlier would start the year without that mark.
