Why this date?
A fixed civil-calendar anniversary — the unification of the Kannada-speaking regions in 1956 — rather than a calendrical observance. It does not move against the Gregorian calendar.

What In short
Karnataka's formation day. The red-and-yellow flag is flown, Bhuvaneshwari — the state's presiding figure — is honoured, and the Rajyotsava awards are conferred.
- Deity: Bhuvaneshwari
Why The reason behind it
As in Kerala, the day marks a state made on linguistic lines, and the observance is a language's as much as a state's. Bhuvaneshwari is invoked as the personification of the land, which gives an administrative anniversary a devotional register the Kerala one does not have.
Traditional basis
States Reorganisation Act, 1956 — The unification of the Kannada-speaking regions.
Karnataka state observance — The Rajyotsava awards and the Bhuvaneshwari honours.
How At home, step by step
- Fly the red-and-yellow flag.
- Attend the Rajyotsava programmes; the state confers its awards on this day.
Fasting and breaking the fast
Not a fasting day.
Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice — if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

For children
Karnataka's birthday. The red and yellow flag goes up everywhere and there are prizes and programmes all day.
Common questions
- Is this a religious festival?
- Primarily civic. Bhuvaneshwari is honoured as the personification of the land, so it carries a devotional element that a purely administrative anniversary would not, but the day itself commemorates the state's formation.
