What In short
The visiting day. Families go to relatives, siblings meet, and households go out โ to the beach, the river or the temple. Women perform the Kanu ritual, setting out coloured rice for the birds and praying for their brothers.
Why The reason behind it
Kaanum means to see, and the day exists for that: the festival ends by going and looking at the people you did not see during it. The Kanu offering to the crows is a sisters' rite, and the wish spoken over it is for brothers โ the same relationship Bhai Dooj marks in another month.
Traditional basis
Tamil Pongal sequence โ Kaanum Pongal as the concluding visiting day.
Kanu pidi household custom โ The coloured rice set out for birds, and the sisters' prayer that accompanies it.
How At home, step by step

- Women set out the Kanu โ coloured rice and vegetables on turmeric leaves โ for the crows.
- Elders give money to the young.
What you'll need
- Coloured rice for the Kanu
- Turmeric leaves
- Sugarcane
Fasting and breaking the fast
Not a fasting day.
Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.
Personal In your region
- Tamil Nadu (Tamil)
Beaches and parks are the day's public face; the Kanu ritual is the domestic one.
For children
The last Pongal day, when you go and see everyone. Sisters put out coloured rice for the crows and ask for their brothers to be well.
Common questions
- Why is rice put out for crows?
- The crows stand in for the family being wished well โ the sisters' prayer for their brothers is spoken over the offering. It is one of several household rites that address birds rather than an image.
Not the same day
These fall nearby or share the tithi, and are often confused with this observance. They are separate, and this site dates them separately.
