This is not commonly observed in North India, the region you've set. It is kept in Bengal (Bengali). We show it rather than hide it โ€” a calendar that only shows you your own region tells you less about the country you live in, not more.

What In short

The worship of Jagaddhatri, the bearer of the world โ€” a four-armed form seated on a lion, with an elephant beneath. Chandannagar and Krishnanagar hold it on the scale that Kolkata holds Durga Puja, with lighting that is the towns' particular claim.

Why The reason behind it

Jagaddhatri is understood as the Goddess in her sattvic aspect, after Durga's rajasic and Kali's tamasic โ€” the third of a sequence rather than a separate devotion. The elephant under the lion is Karindrasura, and read symbolically it is the ego the world-bearer holds down.

Traditional basis

Bengal Shakta tradition and the Jagaddhatri dhyana โ€” The four-armed iconography with the lion and the elephant, and her place after Durga and Kali.

Chandannagar and Krishnanagar puja tradition โ€” The public observance dating to the eighteenth century, from which the towns' scale derives.

How At home, step by step

  1. The main puja is on the Navami; larger observances run from Saptami.
  2. Visit the pandals in the towns that keep it publicly โ€” the illumination is the tradition here.
  3. The immersion follows on the Dashami.
What you'll need
  • Red hibiscus
  • Seasonal fruit and sweets
  • A ghee lamp
  • Flowers for the daily puja through the days kept
Fasting and breaking the fast

Not generally a fasting observance.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

A Goddess who holds up the whole world, sitting on a lion with an elephant underneath. In a few towns in Bengal her festival is as big as Durga Puja, with famous lights.

Common questions

Why does Bengal have a second Durga-like puja a month later?
Jagaddhatri is understood as a distinct form rather than a repeat โ€” the sattvic aspect completing the sequence after Durga and Kali. The Chandannagar and Krishnanagar observances are also historically their own tradition, not an overflow from Kolkata's.
