at sunrise. This observance is governed by udaya, not by the sunrise tithi โ which is why the tithi named here is often not the one the festival is named for.

Governed by udaya
Why this date?
Chaitra Purnima in the north and west. Several regions keep a Hanuman day on a different reckoning entirely โ the Tamil and Telugu observances fall in other months โ so this is one of the observances where the region setting changes not just the name but the date.

What In short
Hanuman's appearance day. Temples hold day-long recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundarakanda, and sindoor mixed with oil is offered to the image.
- Deity: Hanuman
Why The reason behind it
The sindoor offering carries its own story: Hanuman found Sita applying sindoor for Rama's long life, and applied it over his whole body on the reasoning that more would serve better. The day's devotion has that quality throughout โ excessive on purpose, and told as such.
Traditional basis
Valmiki Ramayana and the Sundarakanda โ The recitation kept on this day, and the source of Hanuman's principal narratives.
Hanuman Chalisa tradition (Tulsidas) โ The text most recited on the day across the north.
How At home, step by step
- Recite or hear the Hanuman Chalisa; many temples read the Sundarakanda through the day.
- Offer sindoor mixed with oil to the image.
- Offer boondi or laddu as prasad.
- Saturday and Tuesday observances continue through the year for those who keep them.
What you'll need
- Sindoor and mustard or sesame oil
- Boondi laddu
- Betel leaves
- A ghee or oil lamp
Fasting and breaking the fast
Kept by many, commonly as a single meal; those who keep Tuesday or Saturday vrats for Hanuman keep this day too.
Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.
Personal In your region
- North India yours
Chaitra Purnima; the Chalisa recitation and the sindoor offering are near-universal. - Maharashtra (Marathi)
Kept on the same Chaitra Purnima with day-long temple recitation. - Andhra & Telangana (Telugu)
A separate Hanuman Jayanti is kept later in the year, on a different reckoning.
For children
Hanuman's birthday. He once covered himself head to toe in red powder because he thought if a little was good for Rama, all of it must be better.
Common questions
- Why do some calendars show Hanuman Jayanti in a different month?
- Because more than one reckoning is genuinely kept. The north and west observe Chaitra Purnima; parts of the south keep their own day in another month. This site shows the one your region setting selects rather than merging them.
