Why this date?

The Sangrand of Vaisakh โ€” the Sun's entry into Mesha, which opens the Punjabi solar month. Traditions differ on which CIVIL day a sankranti belongs to. Some take the day the ingress instant falls in; others take the first day whose sunrise finds the Sun already in the new sign; the Tamil and Malayalam conventions add their own cutoffs. That is why the solar new years of different regions can land on different days in the same year even though they mark one astronomical event.

Why The reason behind it

Two things fall together. It is the spring harvest โ€” the year's income, arriving โ€” and it is the day in 1699 that Guru Gobind Singh called the Panj Pyare forward and instituted the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib. The second gave a farming festival a second meaning it has never lost.

Common questions

Is Baisakhi a Sikh festival or a harvest festival?
Both, and it was the harvest first. The 1699 founding of the Khalsa happened on an existing festival day, which is why the two meanings sit together rather than one having replaced the other.
Why does it fall on nearly the same date every year?
Because it is solar, not lunar. It is fixed to the Sun's entry into Mesha, and solar events drift by only a day or so against the civil calendar.
