What In short

Two observances on one day. The Anant Vrat is kept for Vishnu as Ananta, with a fourteen-knot thread tied on the arm; and it is the day the Ganesha idols installed at Chaturthi are carried in procession and immersed.

Why The reason behind it

The Anant vrat is the older layer โ€” fourteen knots for fourteen worlds, kept for fourteen years by those who take it. The visarjan grew onto the same day, and the farewell cry, Ganpati bappa morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya, is an invitation to return next year rather than a goodbye.

Traditional basis

Mahabharata, Anant Vrat narrative โ€” Krishna's instruction to Yudhishthira to keep the Anant vrat, the basis of the thread.

Ganeshotsav tradition โ€” The ten-day festival concluding in immersion, in the public form Tilak gave it in 1893.

How At home, step by step

  1. Tie the anant thread โ€” fourteen knots โ€” after the Vishnu puja.
  2. Carry the Ganesha idol in procession and immerse it.
  3. The farewell is spoken at the water, not at the house.
Fasting and breaking the fast

Those keeping the Anant vrat fast until the puja.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

The last day of Ganesha's festival, when the statues are carried through the streets and put into the water, and everyone shouts for him to come back soon next year.

Common questions

Why immerse an idol that was just worshipped?
Because the visit was always temporary. The idol is made of clay to return to water, and the immersion completes the guest's stay rather than discarding him โ€” which is what the farewell cry says.

Not the same day

These fall nearby or share the tithi, and are often confused with this observance. They are separate, and this site dates them separately.
