Akshaya Tritiya

Also called Akha Teej, Akti

When

We don't publish a date for this yet. Our governed festival dataset currently runs to 2030, and this observance has no row within it after today. We would rather show you nothing than compute a date this site has not validated against a curated year.

Why this date?

Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha. Held to be a self-validating muhurta โ€” an auspicious day that does not require a separate muhurta calculation for the acts traditionally done on it.

  • Computed by the panchanga engine for your location
  • Follows a written selection rule, not a copied list
  • Governed by the whole day rather than a specific period
  • The written guide has not yet been reviewed by a named scholar

What In short

A day held to be auspicious throughout, on which what is begun or given is said not to diminish. Traditionally a day for charity, for beginning ventures, and โ€” much more recently โ€” for buying gold.

Why The reason behind it

Akshaya means undiminishing. The classical associations are with giving: Krishna's gift to Sudama, the akshaya patra given to Draupadi, the descent of the Ganga. The gold-buying custom is a modern commercial overlay on a day whose older meaning is about charity, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are keeping.

Traditional basis

Mahabharata, Vana Parva โ€” The akshaya patra given to Yudhishthira; the source of the day's 'undiminishing' sense.

Bhavishya Purana and nibandha texts โ€” Establish the day's status as a general muhurta and its association with dana.

How At home, step by step

  1. Give โ€” this is the day's oldest and least ambiguous practice. Food, water, cloth, or an unrestricted donation.
  2. Begin what you have been putting off: a venture, a study, a repair.
  3. Where the household keeps it, perform the Lakshmi-Narayana puja.
  4. If buying gold is your family's custom, keep it โ€” but keep the giving too.
What you'll need
  • Tulsi leaves
  • Barley or wheat, for the traditional dana
  • Water vessels or fans, the classical summer gifts
  • Flowers, incense
Fasting and breaking the fast

Not a fasting day.

Fasting guidance here describes traditional practice. It is not medical advice โ€” if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication or unwell, ask a doctor about your own circumstances.

Personal In your region

For children

People say anything you start or give away today will keep growing and never run out. So it is a good day to give something away.

Common questions

Do I have to buy gold?
No. The gold custom is recent and commercial. The classical practice for the day is dana โ€” giving โ€” and a household that gives and buys nothing has kept the day fully.
